I've read this series serveral times and it always has held my attention (i.e. caused sleep to be lost). Hughes is a clever and enjoyable author.
Huges crafts an amazing story here. It's a little light in the same vein as Lawrence Watt Evans, but like LWE, this is a fantastic story and one that never got enough credit for being just absolutely fabulous. If you've never read a fantasy book, this would be a good starting point.
This is one of the best fantasy books that I ever read. Unlike the flood of TSR/Tolkien replica fantasy that came after it, this author spoke with an original voice and wasn't overly influenced by all the regurgitated ideas that have since become a staple. I remember that I kept looking back to the front cover in places, wondering if I were reading a comedy. But after a few pages I would be reassured again and again that it was a serious fantasy after all. It just had a lot of quality humor in it! Great plot, great setting, great fictional kingdoms, well-developed characters, and a thoroughly enjoyable read!
So incredibly happy that it's back in print- let's get HBO to do a series!!

Very good book looking forward to reading some
First read this book while stuck at sea in the bowels of an LPD. I was never a fan of fantasy. After reading the trilogy, I had to own them. After many moves, my first copies were lost. I had to replace them so that I could read them again.
Read this years ago and had to get it again
